The Braking Distance Calculator provides the braking distance, stopping distance and time it takes a car to stop.

Speed

The speed is the speed at which the car is travelling in km/h. For example the road speed limit.

Reaction Time

Time taken for people to react and apply the brakes. For Victoria this figure is 1 second. For NSW and QLD the figure appears to be 1.5 seconds. The reaction time is used to also calculate the amber timing for traffic lights so this means Victorians are allowed less time to stop than other states.

Braking Distance

The distance in metres the car will take to stop from when the brakes are applied.

Stopping Distance

The distance in metres the car will take to stop including reaction time and from when the brakes are applied.

Austroads Amber Time

The time in seconds used to determine the amber light timing.

NOTES

The Braking Distance Calculator was written for car drivers in Victoria, Australia, for dry driving conditions on level roads without a gradient.
From the VicRoads Supplement to Austroads Guide to Traffic Management, Part 9: Traffic Operations (2014) dated October 2015, the reaction time used is 1 second.

VicRoads adopts a reaction speed of 1.0 seconds, unless there are exceptinal [sic] circumstances.
From AustRoads Guide to Traffic Management Part 9: Traffic Operations page 220; the deceleration used is 3 m/s/s.

the deceleration acceptable to the majority of drivers (m/s2), commonly taken as 3.0 m/s2, but in the case of heavy vehicles a lesser value may be appropriate
The grading used is 0 for a level road.
